Objective. Explain the historical process of gestation of the social imaginary of the Colombian engineer between 1848 and 1930 in the midst of capitalist modernization, attending to the challenge and the need to forge specific representations of a community through which it is perceived and projected into society.
Methodology. It starts from the perspective of methodological collectivism, in which identity is formed and transformed within the framework of social relations, and this, in turn, responds to a judicious exercise of self-categorization or vision of the group.

Conclusion. The Colombian engineer forged a social representation linked to the strategic role he would play in the nation’s capitalist development, hand in hand with his pragmatic character and bourgeois sense of efficiency.
